About this puzzle

The first design for a pinback button was patented in 1896 by the New Jersey firm Whitehead & Hoag. Although variations of lapel pins date back to as early as the late 1700s, it was Whitehead & Hoag who innovated the design by inserting a sheet of transparent film made of celluloid over a photograph mounted on a badge to protect the image from scratches and abrasion. Industrial advancements at the time, in both printing and metal stamping made the pinback button an affordable object to produce so its popularity soared soon after its invention.
